About the Reading List

In May 2024, I began formally tracking my reading — inspired by Jamie Rubin's journey to read 1000 books over 25 years. Seeing how he meticulously documented his progress and made it publicly available inspired me to create my own version.

The Goal

Read 1000 books. That's it. Along the way I've set a yearly goal of 60 books — 30 physical, 30 audio. This keeps me moving at a pace that feels sustainable without losing the pleasure of it.

What Goes on the List

Only completed books make it on — unfinished books don't count. I include all formats: physical, eBook, and audiobook. Re-reads are logged every time, so you'll see some titles appear twice.

My Reading Habits

At any given time I'm usually running one audiobook alongside one or two physical books. Audiobooks are for simple tasks that don't need much focus. Physical books are for slowing down, taking notes, and thinking. I always have a black Uniball Eye Micro pen nearby for marginalia.

I aim for at least one hour of physical reading a day — usually non-fiction — and about an hour of audio, usually fiction.

How I Rate Books

  • Subpar — fails to deliver on its promises
  • ★★So-so — not terrible, but leaves much to be desired
  • ★★★Sufficient — gets the job done, nothing more
  • ★★★★Superb — impressive and highly enjoyable
  • ★★★★★Spectacular — outstanding in every aspect

What I Read

Mostly non-fiction and science fiction, though I'm open to anything with a strong recommendation behind it. As a rough guide, I tend to pick books with at least 500 reviews on Amazon — enough of an established reader base that the signal is real.
